Zhao Shen (1898 ~ 1978)
Born in Wuxi County, Jiangsu Province on August 15, 1898, Mr. Zhao Shen was admitted to Tsinghua University in 1911. He went to the Department of Architecture of the University of Pennsylvania in 1920 and received his master's degree in 1923. He has participated in the design of the University of Chicago Skyscraper Building. In 1926, he went to Europe to study architecture with Yang Yanbao. He returned to China in March 1927 and worked as an architect at the Shanghai Youth League Building Office. In the winter of 1930, Zhao Shen Architects was established. In February 1931, he co-organized with Zhao Zhi, Zhao Shen, Chen Zhi Architects, and joined in 1931, and in 1932 changed his name to Huagai Architects. During the Anti-Japanese War, he was based in Kunming and presided over the work of the Huagai Division. From 1950 to 1952, he joined the architects and engineers of five other firms to organize the "Joint Architects Engineers Firm". In 1952, he served as the chief engineer of East China Architectural Design Company. From 1953 to 1955, he was the chief engineer of the Central Design Institute of the Ministry of Construction and Industry. In 1956, he returned to the East China Architectural Design Institute as the deputy dean and chief architect.
His early major design works include Shanghai Baxianqiao Youth Club Building, Shanghai Nanjing Grand Theatre, and Nanjing Railway Department Office Building. During the Huagai period, the projects designed by the company mainly include the Nanjing Foreign Ministry Building, the Shanghai Grand Theatre, and the Shanghai Zhejiang Industrial Bank. He himself responsible for the design of the Eight Immortals Bridge YMCA Building (collaborators: Lijin Pei, Fan Wenming), Wuxi-mao new flour mill, Shen Wuxi Textile Factory, Kunming-bank Xingcheng, Wuxi Jiangnan University. After liberation, he directed the design of major projects in Hangzhou Xiqiao Hotel, Suzhou Hotel, and Fuzhou University. Quanzhou Huaqiao University and Shanghai Hongqiao International Machine have tasted Zambia and the National Independent Party Building.
Mr. Zhao Shen believes that architecture has its commonality, but it should pay more attention to and highlight its individuality; on the basis of functional requirements, architectural modeling should be diversified and modernized.
Mr. Zhao Shen died in Shanghai on October 16, 1978.
