The sky above the Silicon Valley headquarters may soon sound like a four-rotor drone. This is because Facebook intends to fly at least one small wireless communication drone in the air below 400 feet above its headquarters.
Facebook has recently filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which indicates that Facebook is applying to operate a pilot radio service in the 2.4 GHz band.
The document reads: "The purpose of operating this service is to test new communication equipment in a controlled, low-altitude environment."
Another document writes that the test will be conducted in Monroe Park, Calif., and the flying height of the drone will not exceed 400 feet.
Facebook also said in the document that the company hopes to test between October this year and April next year. The document indicates that the contact for the test was Facebook's deputy legal counsel, Mike Johnson.
Facebook is developing Aquila drones that use solar energy, and it hopes to use this drone to provide Internet access services around the world. The drone is huge and has a wingspan similar to that of a Boeing 737. It is designed to fly at 60,000 feet and can fly for up to 3 months at a time. Facebook is testing Aquila drones in Arizona.
According to people familiar with the matter, although Facebook plans to fly small drones over the headquarters of Monroe Park City, this does not mean that it intends to develop a new set of small quadrotor drones or eight-rotor drones. This small drone is only used to test wireless technology, and Facebook intends to apply the wireless technology tested to the Aquila drone.
Facebook is competing with Google in developing and applying various drone technologies. These drones will be used to provide Internet access services and increase the usage of their various network services. Facebook suffered a major blow last month, and its first satellite was destroyed in SpaceX's rocket explosion.
