To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada, the Ottawa National Center for the Arts (NAC) has custom designed and installed a 50-foot transparent LED media wall by ClearLED. With a transparency of 80% and a maximum brightness of 8000 nits, it allows natural light to pass through and displays different content during the day and night. Four additional 32-foot high-transparency LEDs that coordinate the displayed content to create a unique aesthetic digital experience.

Background: NAC is a landmark in Canada and was established in 1967 as the most important art exhibition platform in the country. In 2017, in order to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary celebration, NAC launched a construction project with the goal of building a tower that extends the geometry of the original building to the 21st century, creating new transparency and connections with the city.

The 50-foot-tall lighthouse features a ClearLED video wall display that creates a new, memorable experience that actively connects and influences the public.

This transparent lighthouse attracts thousands of visitors every day. It is used to showcase new works by digital artists from Canada and around the world, demonstrating Canada's cultural diversity.

Challenge: The shape of the new National Art Center building is unique, like a huge lantern. To illuminate the space, ClearLED faces the challenge of designing custom screens to precisely fit the space and provide maximum transparency and brightness. Another obstacle is the need to ensure that the components are lightweight, sturdy and easy to maintain. These four blades must be waterproof and able to withstand the cold and humid climate of Ottawa.

In addition, the construction period is very short, requiring all staff to work in the same closed area at the same time. In addition, site safety must be strictly ensured, making access to the facility without prior planning a challenge.

Program: Planning is critical to success and has begun a year before the project is officially launched. ClearLED formed a dedicated project team and had several discussions with NAC.

More than 400 LED panels are custom designed to accurately match every part of the glass building, with up to 13 unique custom models. All panels are independently tested and quality tested to ease problems during installation. ClearLED uses high-quality Nichia LED beads to ensure long-lasting life and weather conditions in Ottawa.

The project installation team prepared the security license in advance. Materials are shipped and cleared in advance. During the installation, the team resided in Ottawa and stayed in close contact with NAC to schedule visits and minimize conflicts with other industries.

Result: The project was completed on schedule and participated in the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Canada, and attracted the national media to report. More than 350,000 spectators attended the celebration, and this stunning lighthouse is also considered a symbol of Canada's rich culture.

Since then, the National Arts Center has established the lighthouse as a permanent installation and used it for a variety of major events. For example, during October, it was used to support World Mental Health Day and was released on multiple social media platforms.

Today, the lighthouse has become a local landmark, attracting approximately 5 million local residents and tourists every year.
