A three-phase asynchronous motor is mainly composed of a stator, a rotor and an air gap therebetween. After the stator winding is connected to the three-phase AC power source, a rotating magnetic field is generated and the rotor is cut to obtain torque.

The purpose of this is mainly to reduce the starting current, but because of the step-down, the starting torque of the motor will also decrease. Therefore, buck start is only available for no-load or light-load start-up.
