As the world's interconnectedness deepens, embedded system solutions are also adding new connectivity options, as well as advanced sensing capabilities and local analytics. At the same time, the emergence of more and more new features has also driven the need for new protocol stacks, complex algorithms and integrated software frameworks to better schedule and manage system complexity.
At present, even software development is facing multiple pressures, such as shortened development time and the need to meet different market needs, in addition to a variety of connection standards or other special requirements. For embedded projects, the challenges are far more than these, and often include fragmented hardware platforms, software incompatibilities, and inconsistent connection standards. Although the company continues to invest heavily in software engineering resources to improve the many dilemmas facing software development, the change process can be lengthy and a challenging cycle.
To address these issues, Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced a new SimpleLinkTM MCU platform. This platform for developers is designed to integrate the industry's broadest portfolio of interconnected hardware products, unified software solutions and immersive resources in the same development environment. This approach will ultimately help developers reduce design time and help them design products that stand the test of time.
The broadest portfolio of ARM-based 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs)In order for products to be successful in different markets and to respond to new and emerging requirements, designing on platforms that can scale across multiple connectivity standards and the ability to quickly adapt to the underlying products is critical. The SimpleLink MCU portfolio offers a broad range of wired and wireless MCUs with leading-edge features for connected applications, including ultra-low power, robustness, advanced security, analog integration, and support for a wide range of differentiated wired and wireless protocols.
Based on the same foundation, each device in the SimpleLink MCU portfolio integrates features such as acquiring and processing high-precision analog signals, enhancing the system with enhanced security, enhancing remote communications, or being powered by a single button battery. The battery life of the sensor node is extended by several years. These devices can be divided into three categories, as shown in Figure 1:
· The MSP432TM host microcontroller provides advanced analog capabilities and a wide range of memory scalability to run multiple wireless protocols. These wireless protocols are typically used to drive wireless network processors.
· Wireless microcontrollers include an entire System-on-Chip (SoC) solution that incorporates a microcontroller into a wireless network processor to cover a wide range of wireless connectivity and standards, including: Wi-Fi® , Bluetooth® low power, Sub-1 GHz and dual band (Sub-1 GHz and 2.4 GHz).
· The wireless network processor provides an integrated wireless device and network processor to run the network stack. The network stack is connected to a host microcontroller so that it can run top-level applications.

SimpleLink MCU SDKTI developed the SimpleLink MCU based on a single software foundation. This SimpleLink Software Development Kit (SDK) is based on common drivers, frameworks and libraries to ensure 100% code compatibility across the entire platform. This method, no longer limited by device type, provides easy code portability for applications across the entire SimpleLink device, both now and in the future. The portability of platform-level software enables engineers to reuse a single investment in software development over multiple other products and applications within the platform, dramatically reducing design time.
With the SimpleLink SDK, engineers can use TI Drivers and functional APIs to access portable and intuitive peripheral drivers, or choose to explore the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) layer by layer, with lower-level optimization to gain greater control over the application. The integrated TI Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) core solves scheduling problems for multitasking or complex algorithms in real time, while the Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX)-compatible application programming interface (API) is also compatible with third-party OS/kernels. Working with software components has created convenience. A wide variety of SDK plug-ins help engineers connect additional connectivity and external functionality to their SimpleLink applications.

TI's SimpleLink platform provides simple and powerful hardware and software tools that enable engineers to quickly complete the design and development of new products based on customer needs. From using TI's cloud-enabled resource library and TI Resource Explorer to evaluate SDKs and demos, to use SimpleLink Academy's fine-grained planning and interactive training to delve into SimpleLink MCU development, any user can become an expert in getting SimpleLink Once you've developed the LaunchPadTM development kit, you're ready to start developing your design.
Code Composer StudioTM software also provides a feature-rich development environment for SimpleLink devices with its advanced debugging capabilities. At the same time, engineers have the opportunity to use a large number of third-party integrated development environments (IDEs) or tools such as IAR Embedded Workbench or Segger.
In addition, many configuration and advanced debugging tools help engineers simplify the development and debugging experience. Figure 3 shows the broad range of applications for the SimpleLink platform, including chips, development kits, training, tools, and software.
