According to South Korean media reports, Samsung Electronics' Samsung Display has decided to invest up to 2 trillion won ($1.8 billion) in OLED screens to increase production capacity to meet the explosive demand of the market. The investment is scheduled to be completed by the end of June (2013).
According to the news, Samsung does not plan to build additional plants. Instead, it will move more space in the factory in Asan, Chungcheongnam-do, to produce small and medium-sized OLEDs. In the above-mentioned 2 trillion won investment plan, Samsung plans to remove 300 billion won to strengthen the flexible panel sector.
The production line expanded in this investment case is called "A2 line", which currently produces 75,000 OLED panels per month. This panel makes the mobile device lighter, more flexible and less prone to damage. After completing the expansion plan, the monthly capacity of the A2 line will exceed 100,000 pieces and is expected to go online in the first half of next year.
In addition, Samsung plans to significantly reduce the investment in LCD panels, and the amount invested in OLED next year will be 40% more than this year. Samsung is scheduled to launch flexible OLED products in the second half of next year, while rival LG Display plans to begin mass production of flexible OLED screens using plastics by the end of next year.
