Silicon Labs (also known as "core technology") has introduced a series of high-performance I2C programmable crystal oscillators (XO) with optimal jitter performance and frequency flexibility. With typical jitter performance down to 95fs, the Si544/Si549 Ultra Series Programmable XO provides maximum jitter margin for high-speed 28Gbps and 56Gbps transceivers in 100/200/400G communication and data center applications. These XO devices are capable of producing any frequency from 200kHz to 1.5GHz and have a tuning resolution of 4ppt, which allows a single device to meet a wide range of applications.
James Wilson, senior director of marketing for Silicon Labs' clock products, said: "Optical networks, very large data centers and mobile front/return networks are moving at a higher speed, which increases the need for ultra-low jitter clocking solutions. By choosing Silicon Labs The I2C configurable Si54x Ultra Series oscillator allows system designers to easily use the industry's most flexible and programmable XOs, while maximizing SNR margin, reducing development risk and ensuring a successful design."
The Si544/Si549 XO supports up to four preset, pin-selectable start frequencies. After power-up, the device operating frequency can also be easily changed through the I2C interface. The flexibility of this configuration allows a single oscillator to replace multiple single-, dual- or quad-band XO and multiplexer (mux) devices. This family of devices can be powered from a single 1.8, 2.5 or 3.3V supply, eliminating the hassle of using different XO models for different supply voltages. The Si2X XO's I2C interface supports up to 1MHz (Fast-mode Plus) update rates for maximum compatibility with a wide range of ASSPs, ASICs, SoCs and FPGAs.
Supporting 3.2mm x 5mm and 5mm x 7mm packages, the Si544/Si549 XO offers superior frequency flexibility compared to standard fixed frequency XOs in the same package. This compatibility allows hardware designers to prototype with I2C programmable XOs and easily migrate to single-frequency XOs as the design transitions to production.
The Si54x XO is designed for 56Gbps transceivers. These transceiver designs rely on Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM4) signals to transmit serial data. PAM4 uses a fourth-order signal to increase the bit rate of each channel while keeping the bandwidth constant. This trade-off makes the design inherently more susceptible to noise; and by using an ultra-low jitter reference clock such as the Si544/Si549 device to maximize signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) margin, it helps prevent bit errors and keep them Signal integrity.
The Si544/Si549 oscillator uses Silicon Labs' advanced 4th generation DSPLL technology to provide an ultra-low jitter clock source at any output frequency. The devices are programmable to any frequency from 200kHz to 1.5GHz with a resolution of 4ppt. On-chip power regulation provides power supply noise rejection for consistent, reliable, low-jitter operation in high-speed networks and in noisy environments common in data centers. The Si544/Si549 XO also provides the flexibility and reliability to directly replace low-jitter surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based oscillators while providing excellent frequency tolerance and temperature stability. The Si544/Si549 oscillator supports all popular output formats including LVDS, LVPECL, HCSL, CML, CMOS and Dual CMOS.
In addition to the Si544/Si549 family of products, Silicon Labs is also expanding its XO/VCXO product line to include a wider range of package options. These expanded products include the Si54x Ultra Series XO in the industry standard 5mm x 7mm package, the Si59x Universal XO/VCXO (3.2mm x 5mm) and the Si51x Universal XO/VCXO (2.5mm x 3.2mm). By expanding its product lineup, Silicon Labs can provide customers with a one-stop service for high-performance oscillators.
Price and availability
The Si544/Si549 Ultra Series oscillators are in volume production and are available in samples. Silicon Labs offers two pricing levels for the Si54x family based on the designer's jitter requirements. At 10,000 units, the Si549 XO (95fs rms jitter) starts at $8.36; the Si544 XO (150fs rms jitter) starts at $6.69. In addition, to help developers make flexible and convenient evaluations of devices, Silicon Labs has also introduced the Si5xxUC-EVB Universal Evaluation Board, which retails for $95.
