AUO has announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Toshiba Mobile Display (TMD) to acquire a 100% stake in Toshiba Mobile Display Singapore subsidiary AFPD, a low-temperature polysilicon technology (low temperature polysilicon, LTPS) LCD panel manufacturing company.

At the same time, both parties also intend to reach a number of agreements on mutual intellectual property rights. After the acquisition transaction takes effect, AUO will be expected to win high-end notebook and smartphone business.

Toshiba Mobile Display Co., Ltd. has made great achievements in the field of LTPS technology in the past and is a long-term leader in the high-end notebook industry. At present, the world's largest factory producing LTPS is the 4.5 generation line, and the monthly capacity of the AFPD 4.5 line is about 45,000 pieces.

AUO said that the acquisition of the AFPD plant in Singapore will help AU Optronics to establish another Asian operation site outside Taiwan and the mainland. With its excellent location and operational resources, it can supply high-end display markets such as South Asia, the Middle East and New Zealand.

The acquisition is still subject to the signing of the final formal contract between the parties and the necessary approvals.
