China developed a "perpetual motion underwater robot", which is also China's first deep-ocean thermal-type self-powered prototype drifting buoys.

The robot is 3.5 meters long and 1.5 meters wide and can dive to a depth of 4,500 meters. It has the characteristics of low cost, long life, no damage, and no need for daily maintenance, so it can obtain marine data stably for a long time.

The overall technology of the robot is at the international advanced level and will be used in the Global Ocean Observing Program (Argo Project).

The Argo program is designed to quickly, accurately and extensively collect seawater profiles from the upper ocean's upper ocean (from sea level to 2000 m depth). The plan envisages the deployment of a buoy every three latitudes and longitudes in the global ocean, with thousands of buoys forming a large ocean observation network to measure seawater temperature, salinity and pressure.
