A few days ago, OSRAM and Nokia Bell Labs worked together to build a low-cost, high-performance indoor wireless network connection infrastructure. The technology will be on display at the 5G Summit in Brooklyn from April 24-27, 2018. In this joint project, a network connectivity expert from Nokia Bell Labs and lighting experts from OSRAM explored how to use ceiling fixtures to build a highly integrated indoor wireless network connection that supports 5G.

The 5G network is the next stage in the development of LTE (4G). Support 5G terminal equipment, data transmission speed will be as high as 20G per second. In general, signal reception in the building will be affected by the frequency problem used, so an independent indoor network is ideal for a stable high-speed Internet connection. The advantages of this solution include:
· Because ceiling luminaires are densely installed in each building and connected to the light control and network management systems of offices and industrial buildings, the system simply needs to be connected to the building's network communication lines, such as fiber optics;

· New fixtures can also be used for other purposes, such as sensor data collection;
· Easier to install, better performance, lower cost and support for new applications compared to traditional Wi-Fi networks;
· The installation of low-cost wireless connection modules is only slightly more expensive than traditional luminaires;

The prototype test results of the new wireless luminaire show that with a low-cost 2.4G Wi-Fi transmitter, a stable data exchange of more than 100M per second can be achieved. Using more complex wireless modules of different frequencies to combine with each other, multiple communication channels operate at the same time, and it is possible to achieve a network speed close to 1G. If you use 5G technology, because it uses a wider frequency range, you can transfer more data, which will achieve a transmission speed of several G per second.
