The well-known Japanese semiconductor manufacturer Rom (headquartered in Kyoto, Japan) has developed an ultra-low IR Schottky barrier diode "RBxx8 series" that can be used in high-temperature environments for automotive and power supply equipment. Compared with traditional automotive rectifier diodes , it can reduce power consumption by about 40%, which is very helpful for energy-saving circuits such as electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles (HEVs) that require lower power consumption.
This product has been sampling since January (sample price is 50 to 200 yen/piece), and mass production has been carried out on a monthly basis of 1 million units since May. In the circuit of the vehicle and power supply equipment used in a high temperature environment, a rectifier diode and a fast recovery diode ( FRD ) are commonly used due to fear of thermal runaway. However, due to the higher VF values ​​of the rectifier diode and the FRD , it is difficult to achieve the lower power consumption required by EVs and HEVs. In this context, the development needs of products with low VF values ​​of Schottky barrier diodes (SBD) that can be safely used in high temperature environments are increasing year by year.
This time, ROHM achieved the industry's top low IR by adopting the most suitable metal for high temperature environments. Compared with the conventional SBD, the IR is reduced to about 1/100, making it possible to use in a high temperature environment.
As a result, replacement of the rectifier diode and FRD is possible, and the VF characteristics are greatly improved (the VF is reduced by about 40% compared with the conventional FRD). In addition, lower VF can suppress heat generation, and it is possible to achieve a small-scale package, which contributes to the space saving of EV and HEV, which are increasingly electronic and miniaturized.
In the future, ROHM will further promote the low VF and miniaturization brought about by the replacement of rectifier diodes, and continue to contribute to improving the efficiency of vehicle and power supply equipment.
