Analog Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADI ) today announced three new phase-locked loop ( PLL ) devices, the ADF5355 / ADF4355-2/ADF4155, one of the industry's widest frequency coverage and the lowest voltage-controlled oscillator ( VCO) phase noise and achieve these performance in a single device. The ADF5355 PLL has the widest range of 55 MHz to 14 GHz spectrum; the ADF4355-2 PLL has a spectrum from 55 MHz to 4.4 GHz. These devices are available to RF and microwave communication system designers who require a single high-performance wideband frequency synthesizer. Both PLLs incorporate an ultra-low phase noise VCO with a 1 MHz offset of -133 dBc/Hz at 6 GHz – with noise performance at least 2 dB lower than any competing device.

At the same time, ADI also released the ADF4155, an 8 GHz independent fractional-N PLL. These new devices offer designers a variety of alternatives to discrete, high-frequency, higher-power PLLs and VCOs to meet the needs of ultra-wideband applications, including cellular base stations, microwave point-to-point communication links, radar systems, and test and Measuring equipment, etc. The latest version of the ADI simPLLTM design tool (version 3.6) supports all of these latest PLLs; this tool is a free downloadable software for PLL/frequency synthesizer designers to get the best out of ADI's leading PLL solutions Performance is convenient. The new PLL frequency synthesizer and ADIsimPLL tool will be demonstrated this week at Analog Devices booth #415.

The ADF5355 and ADF4355-2 feature a new VCO topology and architecture, and utilize ADI's newly patented advanced SiGe process during development to provide excellent VCO phase noise performance. In ultra-wideband RF and microwave communication applications, ultra-low phase noise has the advantage of improving overall system error rate and increasing data throughput rates, providing better noise immunity and a wider spectral range.

ADI's latest cost-effective, ultra-wideband PLL synthesizer ICs feature up to 125 MHz phase comparator frequency and 38-bit resolution to reduce jitter and allow for extremely fine step sizes compared to discrete GaAs deployments. Integrated PLLs and VCOs in an advanced BiCMOS process dramatically reduce package size and power consumption. In addition, because a single PLL operating frequency can be configured from 55 MHz to 14 GHz, designers can reconfigure their system designs more quickly and reduce device inventory while still supporting multiple bands.
