Imagine if you don’t have a smart phone or tablet in your life. It is almost unbearable! Because of the need to contact friends, check e-mail, use the Global Positioning System (GPS), update social media accounts, pay close attention to news, etc., these devices have become indispensable in our daily lives. The ever-increasing speed of data processing requires more application processors that integrate various functions, so more power is needed to provide this performance. To meet power budget requirements and provide longer battery run times and a more exciting customer experience, you must have greater battery capacity. The blog "How Much Better" clarified the overall development trend of smartphone and tablet battery capacity. Figure 1 shows the battery capacity of each generation of smartphones.
Figure 1: The battery capacity of each generation of smartphones
Larger capacity batteries require more charging current to maintain a standard charge time (approximately 3 hours) at a charge rate of 0.7C. Smart phone users also need the "Power Nap" function (a fast and effective charging function, which takes very little time) in order to be able to quickly charge the mobile phone in the car, at the airport and other places. Fast charging is not just limited to smart phones, but can also be applied to other personal items (such as portable speakers and wearable products). This trend also applies to industrial applications. Think of a point-of-sale or tablet computer for logistics. They are on the road 24 hours a day, 24/7, and never have enough time to fully charge. Looking at all of these examples, you will find a common theme: batteries must be charged quickly and efficiently.
In order to provide greater charging power without increasing the cost of the USB Connector, raising the input voltage is the best choice. For example, customers designing with the bq24192 can not only charge their systems through the traditional USB charging method, but also set the maximum input voltage to 17V to provide more power for the device.
The high voltage input of the charging system can provide a paradigm shift that challenges conventional battery charger designs. For example, an elevated input voltage can change the loss profile of the power converter in the charger. Because the loss is proportional to I2, the conduction loss of the low-side switching field-effect transistor (FET) is more pronounced.
The new bq25890, bq25892 and bq25895 MaxChargeTM product families (with a charge current of 5A) have revisited charging technology from a high input voltage perspective. The bq25892 product family completely redesigns the power stage to minimize power loss during high-voltage charging, for optimum efficiency (91% efficiency at 3A charging current) and thermal performance. The new design enables faster charging, smaller temperature rise, and greater safety and reliability. In addition, the product line offers a variety of features that facilitate the use of larger charge currents. One of these functions is resistance compensation (IRComp). A large charge current will cause a voltage drop in the parasitic resistance of the charging path and the internal battery impedance. In the past two years, due to high energy density, the 1000mAh normalized impedance of a battery cell has increased by about 50% from a mid-level of 200mΩ. Higher impedance will cause charging to go into constant voltage mode prematurely, thus prolonging the charging time. IRComp can increase the charger terminal voltage, making it higher than the battery regulation voltage (increase by I x R voltage drop), so that the charger can stay in the constant current mode long enough for fast charging.
The mobility of smartphones and tablets requires fast charging of large-capacity batteries. The high input voltage can provide the charger with a large input power without increasing the input current. TI's new MaxChargeTM technology perfectly integrates TI's many years of charging expertise, with the aim of making breakthroughs in efficiency and thermal performance, enabling faster charging and a smaller temperature rise.
