The Onkyo HT-S5800C 5.1.2-channel Dolby Sound Home Theater Kit (hereinafter referred to as the 5800 Kit) is Onkyo's latest home theater suite. We know that the introduction of Dolby Panasonic is a medium-term, small-scale upgrade of surround sound technology. It is not as innovative and important as the multi-channel dolby trueHD and DTS-HD of the next generation. The introduction of high-definition multi-channel technology in the next era immediately caused everyone to change their playing equipment and decoding equipment. However, this addition of Dolby Panorama sounds like a big problem for everyone. The Dolby Surround sound requires a head channel, which may be easy to achieve for professional movie theaters and new video rooms. But this has made many living-room parties and previous upgrade parties very passive because it is difficult to hang panoramic sound speakers that meet Dolby requirements in the living room and the center of the existing audio-visual room. Therefore, such users will give up on the panoramic sound for various reasons. The pursuit. In fact, Dolby Company and major equipment companies already thought of the solution, that is, similar to the 5800 kit, using reflective speakers to solve the layout of the head channels, so as to achieve Dolby panoramic sound playback. The Onkyo 5800 kit may be the cheapest one in this type of kit, which is also the most acceptable for entry users, because he is cheap, big, and sells well.

The evaluation starts with Dolby's panoramic sound experience and compares it with the already-arranged high-power 7.1-in-wall system at home, so that everyone has an in-depth and objective understanding of the product.

Out of the box

From the radiating hole above the amplifier, one pair of power tube drivers can be seen for each of the seven channels, for a total of 14 power tubes. This is the most basic configuration for Class AB 7-channel amplifiers. Turn the subwoofer over and see the 8-inch bass unit. The folding ring of this unit feels very soft, it is not a pure natural rubber material, and the sense of damping of the cone is not strong, and it can be pushed with light hands. There is a big difference in the sense of damping from the Jace Cannon below. It can be imagined that such a gun must be a kind of high efficiency, high sound pressure, but lack of speed and impact. Be careful not to be confused by the circle in the middle, that absolutely does not reflect the size of the voice coil. This goods is not Danna...

The supplied remote control is similar to my previous 838 remote control. However, this 444 type amplifier has not passed any THX certification, so no absolute THX button will appear on the remote control. Do you see from the tip of the eye which one is the remote control for the 444 amplifier?

Installation, AccuEQ debugging

After these ones were displayed, I began to connect the equipment.

Since it is an independent audio-visual room, I still put the amplifier on the cabinet. Since the 8-meter line only comes standard with two, the landlord only bought 20 meters of 100-cell speaker cable to connect the three main channels in front.

It can be seen that even the 100-cell speaker cable is a lot rougher than the red and black lines sent by the 5800. In addition, the landlord wanted to use the HDMI splitter in the lower left corner of the screen to connect two power amplifiers at the same time for testing, but discovered this. The distributor seems to be unable to support the transmission of audio in the next era, so there is no way, I can only switch the signal source on the two power amplifiers.

For the arrangement of the front speakers, in order to maximize the synchronization of the sound and picture, I put the speakers close to the sound screen. The subwoofer took advantage of a shot that I buried before.

Surround speaker placement, because the landlord did not surround the speaker rack, so the display may be slightly lower, but this height reflects the actual situation of most home use surround speakers. In accordance with the placement of 5.1.2, the surround speakers should be at the side of the listener 90-110 degrees, not the rear, at this point I still follow the requirements of Dolby Company.

The first thing is of course to connect the AccuEQ microphone that comes with Onkyo for automatic calibration.

Inserting a microphone will display this setting screen. It is important to note that if the 5800 kit is used for the reflected panoramic sound mode, Dobly Speaker (Front) must be selected. The default 5.1.2 head channel is the ceiling speaker. This requires everyone to pay attention.

This is the data after AccuEQ finished measuring, frequency, distance, and level. It seems that the test distance data is also correct, and the results are also very symmetrical, indicating that the accuracy is high. After the computer automatically finishes the program, you will be asked if you want to enable automatic EQ adjustment. I am lazy.

In addition, the Onkyo 444 amplifier also has a speaker size for each channel. Here he has given the tested data as small, but Onkyo’s official high-level manual says that speakers larger than 300px can be set to large to achieve full-range sound, but many experiences tell us that the sound below 80hz is still delivered to the bass The gun was solved, even including the JBL series one array system. In addition, there will be a "double bass" option in this setting. In fact, he does not mean that two subwoofers can be connected at the same time. It means that when your main box is set to large, the low frequency output from the main box will also be Play it back in the subwoofer. Here, this function may never be used, because in terms of the power of this amplifier, it is not possible to push a full-frequency box, and simply setting double bass will easily cause phase problems. At the same time, the 444 amplifier operation feels significantly slower than the 838 amplifier's response, which may be the reason for the CPU limit...

Panoramic sound experience

As the main selling point of this stereo, the actual experience of Dolby's panoramic sound is very important. Therefore, I need to introduce the related theory of Dolby's panoramic sound first.

According to Dolby's official documentation, Dolby Panorama broke through the original "channel-based" surround sound and established a "sound object-based" surround sound system.

In other words, what was the focus of the previous channel is what sounds, and now it is to focus on where this object should be (it seems to be just a moving object, and the overall sound floor is still a 9.1 configuration).

The concept of each channel will be weakened, such as this example in the Dolby Panasonic White Paper. For example, some theaters have 3 speakers in the left surround. Because of the limitations of the channels, the traditional surround sound technology connects the three channels in parallel to obtain an entire wall of the speaker, so positioning is based on the general positioning of the wall. The Dolby PA system will make full use of these independent speakers distributed on the wall, and then use the DSP algorithm to accurately drive the first speaker in front of the left to make the sound positioning more accurate, as shown in the following figure:

This also brings an advantage. The previous 5.1 and 7.1 all had separate audio tracks for playback on Blu-ray discs. The 5.1 audio uses 5.1 files, and the 7.1 audio uses 7.1 files (most of which are, of course, power amplifiers.) With DSP processing capabilities, 5.1 channels can be expanded to more channels via neo6 technology.) The current Dolby Surround sound projection system requires only the same track to support the arrangement of dozens of speaker arrays from 5.1.2 to the cinema. And because these speakers are fully self-contained, more detailed settings can be made on the amplifier or DSP to make the Dolby Sound System match the room better.

The purpose of the "sound object-based" technology is, of course, to reproduce the true 3D displacement of the sound object, so the importance of the overhead channel begins to manifest itself. At the same time, only the recording of the surround sound using this technique is possible to configure the head channel, because the head channel has more position than the traditional horizontal channel, if you do not use this “sound object-based "Technology, then the entire Blu-ray Disc will have different audio tracks such as 5.1, 7.1, 5.1.2, 7.1.2, 5.1.4, and 7.1.4, and the volume will be too large. However, if only the highest-standard 7.1.4 recording method is provided, and the data between the different channels is combined by the DSP calculation, then the traditional multi-channel processing method is obviously not directly and accurately performed without this “sound object-based” technology. What's more, if I were to have a 9.1.4 system? The entire system must not be perfectly driven...

In addition, Dolby defines the head-channel speaker type. There is a way to include a head speaker, and a "Dolby sound box". The main difference is that the former is to arrange real high-power wide-radio frequency full-range speakers at the top of the head, and the latter is a reflective speaker designed using psychology and acoustic technology to virtualize an overhead sound field. Dolby also considers that the latter may be more easily accepted by the average family, so the white paper also specifies the form of this speaker. The 5800 suit is exactly this form.

Reflective panoramic sound experience

First of all, let me introduce my evaluation environment. The entire room is approximately 2.8 meters wide, 4.8 meters long, and 3 meters high. The upper half of the wall uses a fiber acoustical panel to absorb high frequencies, and the lower half uses a hole-wood acoustical panel filled with sound-absorbing cotton to handle low frequencies, and a second-order diffuser is placed overhead. Improves the ability to surround the entire sound field, with heavy ants on the floor. The first three speakers were placed at a height of about 1.1 meters, and were basically level with the human ear. Because of the lack of a tripod, the placement was a bit low, about 500px below the plane of the human ear and 110 degrees with the emperor. Because this evaluation is mainly based on sound evaluation, the requirements for projected image quality are not high. For debugging and photographing purposes, the entire evaluation process is performed with wall lights and curtains open. Therefore, the projected image is rather dim. God does not spray. Since you want to experience the full range of panoramic sound effects, this official Dolby company's disc is certainly necessary for evaluation, then let us test one by one scene.

The first is introduction, although it is only a short introduction, and there is a man who speaks loudly about the benefits of Dolby's panoramic sound, but still can hear various insects hovering in the head, the first impression made me The feeling of bracketing is far better than the small system of 5.1 configuration.

After the first fragment is the scene of nature, the most realistic head effect is also from this paragraph. When it rains, the buzzing sound of the leaves on the top of the head is very real.

In general, the reflection-type panoramic sound horn plays a significant role in establishing the top of the sound field, clearly better than the 5.1 state, and the entire space is full of sound.

Because the side and rear surrounds of the ceiling have been installed before, although the placement is a bit away from the official Dolby's point of view, it's relatively backward, and it's generally more suitable as an overhead speaker. My previous Anqiao 838 After the amplifier upgraded the panoramic sound firmware, it also connected the rear surround of the 7.1 to the side surround, and the side surround was used as the head channel for a period of time. At the same time, Onkyo 444 amplifier is divided into three directions: front, middle, and back for the setting of the top speaker. In this case, it is set to “after”.

There is also a problem here, due to the positioning of the power amplifier in the bridge 444, the surround channels are all fixed clips for the butterfly clips. I used 300 speaker cables for the surround speaker cables. ... Nothing. Only half of the core can be inserted with scissors, and it is necessary to avoid too many wires leaking so as not to cause a short circuit.

OK, replay the previous panoramic sound disc. Here I do not need to repeat the figure. Here I will describe the feeling. After using the two dipoles around the head as the head horn, the most obvious change is that the high-frequency details of the rain and the thundering period have become significantly richer. The subtle rustling and the thunderous bursting feel make people feel more and more. On the ground. At the same time, in the scene of Transformers' big dynamics, the sound at the top had a clearer explanation, and the amount of information was much larger than that of the reflex horn used before.

But what comes with it is that some sounds are clearly emitted from two speakers and cannot be combined with the timbre of the front channel and surround channel, and even the sound field directly above the head is not as good as a reflection type. In other words, the sense of enveloping is not as good as using a reflective horn. The appearance of this situation may be due to the fact that my overhead speaker is not in a good position, too close to both sides, and away from the audience; at the same time, the horn speakers used in the tweeters of these two speakers may be too concentrated. So that the sound field is on the top but it is somewhat vacant. However, all in all, using a ceiling speaker as a panoramic sound is a significant improvement in the quality of the overhead channel when conditions permit, and better clarity and dynamics. Of course, the premise is that the correct speaker position and Dolby recommended full frequency , wide pointing horn.

At the same time, I discovered that, in fact, as a smallpox channel, especially when it is raining, the output is not large, and the surround sound channel is also associated with the sound of rustling. However, it can be heard at the listening position. Integral surround sound field. When I connected the reverberatory speakers, I also found that in this rainy situation, the reflex horns only produced less rustling noise, and the sound field at the top of the head was noticeable. This has to admire Dolby's psychology and acoustics technology, because if you need a lot of reflected sound energy, 5800 set of 2.5-inch reflective speaker under loud sound pressure will have a great distortion resulting in deterioration of sound quality. It is this kind of acoustic effect that can be used to make this reflective speaker work reliably and stably.

Compared with high power in wall system

In my previous audio and video room post, I can see that I am still advocating high power. The key to cinemas is that the power is enough and the entire system will work reliably under low distortion. The power of my system is still quite adequate. With the aid of two professional rear-ends, the left and right channels are each 4 ohms 475w; the center channel is 8 ohms 275w2; the four surround channels follow the maximum of Onkyo 838 Power consumption 720w minus static power 90w, four surround channels can get about 630w output (if you go to output 7 channels at the same time, each channel is only about 90w of foreign assessment of power); subwoofer 400w. The above are the rated output power, and the total rated power is 475+475+2752+630+400=2530w, which should be sufficient under this area. The Onkyo 444 power amplifier's maximum power consumption is 420w, minus the static power 55w, the actual maximum output power is about 370w, each channel is about 53w, subwoofer output power is 80w, the system's total rated power is 370+ 80=450w. At the same time, the sensitivity of this set of speakers is only 83db due to the limitation of the unit diameter. In other words, under my listening distance of about 3 meters, the maximum sound pressure of a single speaker is only 83+10lg53-10lg3^2=91 dB. This sound pressure is obviously far less than the THX certification standards. If it is the first three speakers (assuming a sensitivity of 83 dB here) all reach the maximum output of 53w, then the sound pressure will be 91 + 10lg3 = 95.7 dB. If all speakers (except subwoofer output) reach the maximum output, the sound pressure will be 91+10 lg7=99.5 dB. In other words, the entire system can also have an output of about 100 decibels, which should be quite shocking in the small living room. In fact, the total power of the system such as the bose535 is also 350W, but it is well received by everyone including my own. Therefore, fully optimized sound technology may make up for the lack of output power, especially in the living room or when watching a movie. In this snippet, the performance of spark squeak positioning in the 5800 kit is very accurate. The trumpet's voice is a bit sharp, and the momentum of the wall-mounted system sound waves seems to be a bit of a horror... It's relatively gratifying that the 8-inch subwoofer in the 5800 kit does not perform as well. Cowardly, the sound of the explosion can still shake the floor, but the explosion is much less intense. Judging from this video assessment, the 5800 kit can also have considerable dynamics in a small space, limited to power and caliber, and some sound performance is not perfect, which is excusable. Here still have to remind the classmates with thin slabs, the sound is not easy to open too much, be careful about neighbors coming to the door...

Pop concert

A surround sound speaker at home should be able to meet the various needs from the news network to the Hollywood blockbuster concert to the superstar concert, so that a multi-purpose audio system is the most needed in the living room. Here, I used the vernacular concert of all ages to evaluate.

However, when I heard a sound, I felt something wrong. The voice of my sister seemed to be a bit too high, and the sound of the drums was a bit thin, and the dive was not quite in place. We have heard live concerts surely know that in a good scene, the sound of the drums at the end of the drums not only has to be strong, it can make the clothes vibrate along with them, and the dive is also amazing. The entire venue is shaken. I studied the settings of the amplifier and found that the front panel TONE setting button can have a phase matching bass option when pressed continuously. By literally speaking, is the phase of the entire subwoofer adjusted after optimization? After turning on the options, I found that the bass was significantly enhanced and the dive became deeper, almost equal to my 15-inch subwoofer. It seems that this is a good thing. So I increased the volume to see if the system was rated as non-jamming and the maximum comfortable sound pressure was enough to reflect the 5800 kit's distortion and power from one side. The test result is rather regrettable. When the maximum sound pressure is 88.4 dB, it is almost 5800 sets of hearing tolerance limit, and even if you increase the level 1 volume, you will feel uncomfortable. At the same time, under such conditions, the dynamics of the 5800 kit were compressed more severely, and the dynamics of the entire concert sounded relatively flat. This may be power limitation.

While the same system was played on the large walled system, the sound pressure was still better than 95.2 dB, and the instantaneous dynamic sound pressure could exceed 98 dB.

Why is the actual sound pressure we measured here still less than the theoretical sound pressure we calculated earlier? Because Japan's power amplifiers calculate the rated output when they are all calculated with a distortion of 1%, in fact, the distortion at this time is already many times the 0.08% distortion of European and American power amplifiers, so most of the cases are simply not rated at all. The power will be greatly distorted. At this time, either the speaker can't stand or the ear can't stand it.

As the assessment progressed here, a bug appeared. As you can see, the column displayed in the lower right corner of the amplifier has not disappeared. Pressing the volume level at the same time will only change the volume level on the power amplifier panel. There will be no other display on the screen.

Even after I plug in multiple power amplifier power cords, this annoying display column still cannot be eliminated by itself. At the same time, any operation of my remote control cannot be displayed on the screen. I can only go to dinner and sleep, and the amplifier will be completely prolonged. After power off, continue with the following evaluation.

Jazz concert

Fortunately, after the power amplifier has been powered off for a long time, the bug is eliminated, otherwise I really don't know how to continue the evaluation. Jazz music is a very easy music. After you go home after a tiring day, you can relax and relax by listening to such music and eating and chores. Here we chose Kelly King’s 2008 concert Blu-ray disc, where the slow drums, deep bass, and Kelly’s iconic gold-colored sax sound make people feel comfortable.

When I started playing this disc, I always felt that the volume was too low, and it was too slow. Later I discovered that it was before I opened the phase matching bass. In fact, it was not a technology that matched the phase. In the manual, I only introduced the enhanced bass, that is, Say simply increase the level, then this level of bass will definitely come with a series of questions, after the evaluation I also turned him off.

Playing this disc again, I will find that the 5800 suit is suitable for this kind of playback. The bass is not fast, but the depth is OK, and the overall music style will be more soothing. Kelly King's sax sound is a bit too big compared to the big system, but it will not be hard to hear. In short, this kind of playback feels satisfactory, and it sounds jazz.

Classical concert

Below I will test a more challenging project - classical music. It is generally believed that the highest level of sound reproduction is classical music. The two horns can reproduce the timbre and positioning of the musical instruments of hundreds of bands, which is itself a test of the recording, playback and listening space. Play my favorite Brückner Symphony No. 8 DVD, where the second movement has a number of sections that are continuously tapped by the timpani to test the low-frequency response speed.

In the second movement of the eighth symphony, the violin started to play and found problems. The midrange was obviously thin, and the treble was limited in the cut-off frequency and lacked in the sense of air. The whole tone was dull, stiff, and even somewhat "plastic." The front sound field is loose and there is no sense of positioning and space. When the timpani sounds, the problem becomes even more pronounced. The sound of the entire timpani was almost indistinguishable and mixed into one, which was already serious enough to affect the degree of appreciation. This may be related to the lack of speed of the subwoofer. The influence of this sense of speed in the symphony is simply fatal. In general, the 5800 kit is not a good device to appreciate symphony, of course, most people will not do so.

5.1.2 Comparison 7.1

Finally, I would like to talk about the contrast between panoramic sound and traditional 7.1. In this evaluation, I used the 5800 kit and the large-scale system installed in the wall to play the Dolby Surround sound test disc, which was mainly analyzed from the aspect of sound field location.

Or start from the first fragment of the pan sound test disc. In the fragment of nature, the sound of the insects and birds hovering above the head of the 5800 suit can be expressed very smoothly. When playing with the 7.1 system, I found that because my four surround speakers are ceiling mounted, the overhead sound field does not feel emptiness. On the contrary, because the rear sound field exists, the insect circling the head 360 degrees. The surround effect is better. Therefore, in order to really experience the best panoramic sound, we still develop in the direction of 7.1.2 or 7.1.4. After all, the reconstruction of the rear sound field was already very important in the 7.1 era.
